The rooms were a bit small and old with questionable linens but surprisingly quiet despite the central location. The service was a mixed bag, ranging from dismissive to efficiently friendly. Dining was basic but offered good value for money. The overall experience was dampened by the dark and dingy atmosphere and unpleasant odors in the rooms.

The hotel is very close to the shops, with the free bus stop about 100 meters away, close to rail, in a one-way system, and very close to the Hay Street Mall, Barrack Street Jetty, Perth Mint, St Mary's Cathedral, and many restaurants and shops. The dining experience in the Criterion Cafe was worth the money, but it had a very limited choice of food and possibly the worst buffet breakfast I've ever had.
